seting up motorola surfboard 4200 using usb on mandrake 9.1
 

hi ppl, can some 1 please help me, i have been trying to set up my internet connection and aint havin any luck. could some1 please give me a step by step discription on how to set up the Motorola Surfboard 4200 modem using the usb connection, on linux mandrake 9.1, any help would b GRATFULLY appreciated : ) and will returrn the favour to who ever can help me get it workin. (PS. am a complete noob when it comes to linux):study:

I could never get my 4100 working with usb and went to ethernet instead. It gives superior performance in both windows and linux with ethernet and nics are so cheap, there's really no good reason not to do it ethernet. I'm fairly sure mdk9.1 won't support your modem in usb without updating/patching the kernel. The kernel module you need for usb-ethernet devices is CDCEther which is available in mdk10. That being said, I'm not familiar with how good that driver works or if it works at all with the surfboard modems. Check out this link discussing this issue:

hmm, not lookin good then, may just have to download mandrake 10, would do it using ethernet, but the 2 NIC's i have r already in use, ( use them for network when in windows) would consider gettin a new NIC, but that would leave me with 0 PCI slots left, and plan to put in a video card soon?!? n e way, thnx 4 the tip, looks like i gonna b downloadin 4 a few hrs! no doubt will b bak 4 some help once i have downloaded it : )

I use a 4200 Cable modem . I have a MDK 9.2 / WinXP dual boot. I originally used USB for windows and Ethernet for Linux but that is just plain messy. I purchased a $99NZ DSE router , spent 5 minutes configuring it and internet is now set up for both XP and MDK. Also frees up a USB port which is a bonus.
