seting up a name server

I want to set up named in order to be able to create subdomains on a RH9 machine. What do I have to do ?
Please help!

PS: I have a full install of RH9... I've learned somewere else that a bind utility is needed. What does it do ? How can I configure it ?

thank you !

Check if you have bind installed (rpm -qa|grep bind). If not, install it (it's somewhere on your installation cds). There are also example configuration files, but you should create your own ones. There's a tutorial http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html (with example files).
