Set up USB to use Linux on other computers

Hello: Locoengineer here, and my user name refers to my pre-retirement career as a locomotive engineer. I am a newbie, and have been using Linux Mint on my desktop computer. To say I am pleased with its performance would be a definite understatement. Now, my question.

I have an Acer laptop PC with Windows 7 on it. I do nnot wish to convert it to Linux at this time, but somewhere I saw something about setting up a USB to run laptops without a CD drive on them. Can anybody direct me to this information? It could be handy when traveling so I could use Linux on other computers.

Thank you

Locoengineer

Welcome, locoengineer!

Practically all Linux liveCD's can be put on a USB stick. You can download such a liveCD image and use dd utility to put it to a USB [flash]drive. There are also Linux distributions dedicated for live usage, check out SystemRescueCd, Knoppix, GRML, etc ... etc.

In addition to the above suggestions, if you are now using windows you can also use the following software to create a bootable flash drive:

unetbootin, pendrivelinux, or linuxlive usbcreator. Googling any of them should take you to a download site. Simple instructions available also.

Few links that can help;
Quote:

Pendrivelinux <- 'Pendrivelinux provides simplified information to make it easy for anyone to install, boot, and run their favorite Gnu/Linux Distribution from a portable flash drive! + Boot and run Linux from a USB flash memory'.

Live USB_Wiki <- 'A live USB is a USB flash drive or a USB external hard disk drive containing a full operating system which can be booted. Live USBs are closely related to live CDs, but typically have the ability to save settings and permanently install software packages back onto the USB device.' + 'system administration, data recovery method' + includes distribution table reference
Hope this helps.

You cab boot and run Linux on any computer without installing.

2) You may install Linux on USB ( min. 8GB).
Place Grub on USB .( If USB is recognised as sdb,place grub on sdb)
With this USB(8 GB Min) you can boot on other computers and save all your working in Home Folder
While using other computer set default booting sequence in BIOS as
