Set up USB to use Linux on other computers
Hello: Locoengineer here, and my user name refers to my pre-retirement career as a locomotive engineer. I am a newbie, and have been using Linux Mint on my desktop computer. To say I am pleased with its performance would be a definite understatement. Now, my question.
I have an Acer laptop PC with Windows 7 on it. I do nnot wish to convert it to Linux at this time, but somewhere I saw something about setting up a USB to run laptops without a CD drive on them. Can anybody direct me to this information? It could be handy when traveling so I could use Linux on other computers. Thank you Locoengineer |
Welcome, locoengineer!
Practically all Linux liveCD's can be put on a USB stick. You can download such a liveCD image and use dd utility to put it to a USB [flash]drive. There are also Linux distributions dedicated for live usage, check out SystemRescueCd, Knoppix, GRML, etc ... etc. |

In addition to the above suggestions, if you are now using windows you can also use the following software to create a bootable flash drive:
unetbootin, pendrivelinux, or linuxlive usbcreator. Googling any of them should take you to a download site. Simple instructions available also. |
