services lagging my machine

hey, i have redhat 7.3, and i think i have too much running on it at once, coz it takes about 10-15 seconds to load mozilla, and anything else.

i want to run a half-life server, but it's too slow coz of that, does anyone know how i can choose what i have running? so i only have the core x windows and the half life server running

or, when i press ctrl+alt+f2, and it takes me out of x windows, are all of those things still running?

i would be really greatful for any help on this, because im running a half-life server at a lan in a week.

first of all if it's a slow machine you are not going to want to run X while you are running the server. The best thing to do is start the machine in level three then start hlds from a terminal.

to start in level three

also run this command from terminal

go to system services and turn off the services you don't need to come up at boot by deselecting them in the list.

tab over to ok and hit enter, then quit

the services that you turned off will not start at the next boot.
