my linux bos red hat Ent 5.0 is reporting CPU usage 100% for the service/agent cimserver
basically is slows down my system and I have to kill it so my system is OK again.
my question is Can I set the CPU usage for this service? I mean can I set it to use only 4% or 10% of my CPU? or any other way to troubleshoot this 100% CPU usage. Since I've uninstalled and reinstall the agent and same issue
You could nice/renice it to make it play better, but that sounds like a bug/misconfiguration unless you have some reason cimserver should be using that much processor.
can he on red hat run top or htop in the terminal
to see whats running
om 1 of my computers with 910 karmic i had to go into the
gstreamer-properties window click video an set the
plugin to x windows system (no xv)
cpu come down as did the fan
you do need to restart the computer
I agree with Chris, you are better to attack the problem rather than the symptom.
However, you could look at cpulimit. Haven't used it in anger, but I did download it a year or two back and the code looked sane.
Note that limiting the CPU usage isn't quite the same as setting the cpu usage - limiting is probably what you meant, even though setting is what you wrote.
There are some circumstances in which limiting the cpu usage to some predetermined upper limit is a very rational thing to do; you are probably not in one of those, except as an interim 'band aid' while you sort out the underlying problem.
