English is not my native language, may be for that reason i can't fully understand you... but i want to help you, so i will need some help from you.

let me rephrase your situation to let's see if i understand:

we got a laptop running ubuntu 12.04
firefox can't find <any> server

the next part really needs a ',' or a dot, or something because i can't understand it, it's like a lot of affirmations/situations on une single line and y can't understand you on that.

Ubuntu is a distribution, whish the 12.04 version is the released on April 2012, and it's a Long Term Support (LTS) release, so you will get support from Ubuntu community for a very long time.

You are having connectivity troubles, but i need more info here to help you:

a) do you know how to use a linux or Ubuntu system?
b) if a is yes: do you know how to use the shell / command line interface?
c) do you know if is there any other program besides Firefox that can connect to the Internet?

best regards

Let see if we can narrow this down a little.

First questions:
How are you getting the the internet wireless connections or a patch cord.

If the answer is a wireless connection, try connecting with a patch cord.

Secord question:
Do you know how to get to a command line (terminal)
