These are the software specs of my webserver :

Database Version: 4.1.10a (MySQL)
PHP Version: 4.3.10
Web Server: Apache/2.0.53 (Linux/SUSE)
WebServer to PHP interface: apache2handler
Joomla! Version: Joomla! 1.0.8 Stable [ Sunshade ] 26-Feb-2006 05:00 UTC

As you can tell its a joomla-based site.

The current problem i am experiencing is that as soon as the load to the site picks up, the webserver basically dies. The machine is still up, but i can't even get into the OS to see what's wrong. Does anyone know of any problems specifically between the software i'm running? Or know of a possible cure for this problem?

You could install and run atop logging to file. Then you can test your setup and replay the load info later on to see what's killing the box.
