seriously, i need help!

I'm so confused, i don't know where to start, i feel like getting tossed in the middle of a giant labyrint without any legs to walk through it with. I really think that i need to have some kind of program that gives me the whole picture, where i can see the folder and the the content, but still use the terminal thing, like a explorer or something. And I really have to know how to install source files, how do unpack, compile, and install.

does anyone know a program like that, and can make a quick guide wich command i'll need to use to when unpacking, compiling and installing
