Serial ATA (Still need Help)

Are there any distros that recognize SATA drive?

TigerOC 09-09-2005 10:07 AM

SATA drives should be supported in any distro using the 2.6 kernel.

In addition many of the "major" distros still using the 2.4 kernel have kernel avaliable for using a SATA disk.

Pick the distro you're interested in and do a quick google to make sure they support SATA.

Fedora Core 4 does, its just tat when you install it you need to do the following

linux wibble
linux

Ok you don't need to type wibble, but for some reason when you boot of the CD or DVD and type Linux it doesn't work, however if you type in linux <word> it comes back with an erros (as you would expect) and then type in linux and press enter it installs like a peach!

hope that helps

Ok guys thanks but I think I need to make myself a little clearer,

What I am trying to do is access a NTFS drive connected through SATA I have installed NTFS compatibility to my RH but when I type

Code:

/sbin/fdisk -l
I recieve

Code:

Disk /dev/hda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

  Device Boot    Start      End    Blocks  Id  System
/dev/hda1  *        1      9728  78140128+  7  HPFS/NTFS

Disk /dev/hdb: 10.2 GB, 10204766208 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1240 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

  Device Boot    Start      End    Blocks  Id  System
/dev/hdb1  *        1        13    104391  83  Linux
/dev/hdb2            14      1045  8289540  83  Linux
/dev/hdb3          1046      1240  1566337+  82  Linux swap

now as you can see it recognizes my 80gb and 10gb but my 2 SATA 40gb HDs (these are where my music is stored. Is there a way post-install to do this?

Honestly, this happens, it took me a while to figure it out.. I don't know why, found the answer on the fedoraforum webpage..

Sometimes its best not to ask why....

fieldyweb 09-10-2005 12:12 AM

So your running RH? I think that confusted everyone because your question asked if there was a distro which supported SATA..

I will format my spare 50GB on the SATA HDD this week, and load WinDoze NTFS for you and see if FC4 sees it..
