Question Sendmail error: Unknown Address

Greetings,

I am running the version of Sendmail that ships with RedHat 9. My mail server is located on a small LAN. I have opened the appropriate ports on my router and my RH firewall.

The problem I have is that I can not send mail from a machine located outside of my LAN. If I try to access my smtp server from a machine located outside of my LAN, I get the following error: sendmail error: unknown address. The server did not recognize the recipients. Using the same username and password, and sending to the same email address from a machine INSIDE my LAN = no problem and no error. I can access my POP mail from both inside and outside the LAN.

Any ideas. Thanks for the help.

Dan

I think it has to do with which IPs you allow to relay through your mail server. You do not want to allow any address to relay through your mail server. Anyone could then ues your mail server to send large amounts of email out as if it were coming from you. You shuld be able to pole your mail from outside your network, because that requires authentication. If you want to send mail out through your mail server VPN or ssh into you network. You could also install a webmail server that requires users to authenticate.

If you don't care about any of this stuff I told you and you want to open your server up anyway I think the file is /etc/mail/access then run makemap to make the /etc/mail/access.db file.
