How can i make sure sendmail is running with the appropriate permissions to be able to check passwords when i try to log onto the server from a windows 2000 workstation and try to access mail from the linux red hat 8 server?

to log on for what? this sounds like an IMAP / POP3 (i.e. downloading your mail to read it) issue, which is nothign at all to do with sendmail
