sending mail outside problem

I'm running Red Hat 9 and can send a mail to myself on my local system, but I am unable to send a mail to outside users (ie hotmail, yahoo, etc). For example, I type
echo "Test" | mail
The prompt displays silence and I never receive a message. Whats wrong here?

Are you trying to send mail through ISP account (using their SMTP server), or have you set up your own Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) server (like sendmail)?

The way you are trying probably requires a sendmail server to be configured on your box. Not sure where the spool directory is, but usually /var/spool/mqueue or something like that will hold your mail - check /var/log/messages for specific errors too.

Good point. I would like to set up my own server, how do I do that?
