Smile Sending mail from linux box

Hello! I am new to Linux as well as this forum. I was hoping to get some help with my problem. I have recently installed fedora core 3 on my linux box. I have managed to figure out a little apache and get a http server going. I then started to write some perl scripts hoping to send me automated email notifications. In my perl scripts i tried to send mail via the command line tools such as "mutt" and "mail"

eg,
mutt email@email < file_to_mail
cat file | mail email@email

However, the mail never got to the destinations, instead I got mail back saying mail was undeliverable.

I did not do any configurations to mail at all. I just tried to send mail "out of hte box" from the fedora core 3 install.

Can someone point me into the right direction on hwo I can send mail fromthe command line?

Any help would be great.

thanks,
Alex

i'm guessing here (and i shouldn't be) but by default mail won't send outside your network, so you really need to configure a proper postfix server to do this.

Thankfully this is rather straight forward www.postfix.org has stacks of guides / howtos.

But i could be wrong and mail will do it by default; also there is another concern, if your mail client is not properly configured other servers will bounce it, issues like a fqdn (fully qualified domain name) and such may arrise.
