selectable dual boot
 

I just burned ubuntu 7.10 onto a cd and i want to install it on my laptop. I'm planning to reformat the whole hard drive to get rid of the crap dell puts on but i want to have a selectable screen like the one windows has when you have multiple OS's on the hard drive. Does the computer do it automatically or is there something special i have to do with the partitions and such.

If I understand you correctly:

1. you want to have both linux and windows
2. completely delete/format windows and reinstall windows
3. install linux.

Do the following:

1. backup everythin important
2. Download gparted CD http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
3. format and partition space as you like
4. put windows CD and reinstall
5. put ubuntu CD and reinstall.
