Question Segmentation Faults?

What is a segmentation fault?

More specifically, I've been installing some of the freshrpms in the terminal, for example, in Red Hat 9

[doomsdaychef@root]rpm -Uvh mplayer-1.0-0.2.pre2.fr.i386.rpm

It's getting halfway through the preparation process then just giving me the 'segmentation fault' error

I've been getting this same fault while installing a few, but not all, other rpms

I can't tell you what the specific cause of your segmentation faults is, but I can tell you that segmentation faults are caused, among other things, when programs perform illegal instructions or improperly allocate memory.

Do you get the seg faults with every rpm you try to install? If it is only with some rpms, do you always get them with those packages? If it will install for you, you might try updating your rpm application.

Much appreciated.

I had suspicions that segmentation faults were the linux version of the cursed windows 'this program has performed an illegal operation'

It's only been with specific rpms, mplayer, and certain driver packages

I'll try updating my rpm software
