Seeking a Password manager/generator program

Migrating from XPpro, and the use of the program named Acerose, I seek a Linux program that will act as a password wallet, preferably one that also would generate passwords. My question is there such a program; if not what have all Linux users done in the past? Thanks

KDE comes with one, but I don't recommend using one.

If you are using Gnome, I believe there is there is a password "wallet" app built in. Same does for KDE. These programs integrate well with those from the same desktop environment, but you might have trouble getting them to work easily accross desktop environments - i.e. if you run KDE and the KDE wallet thing, don't expect it to keep track of passwords in gnome apps.

I don't think these programs will generate passwords for you (I might be wrong as I don't use them extensively). I live on the command line, so I'm usually using pwgen to generate passwords, and I keep track of them in a GPG-encrypted file, but that's just me being all manual. Old habits die hard.

So all these sites ask for PWś, is the same one just used over and over? How about financial sites? I guess that coming from MS where security seems to be a much larger issue, that I am concerned.

You can use apg (a command-line tool) to generate passwords: uppercase only, lowercase only, mixed-case; alpha only, alpha-numeric, with or without special characters, set minimun and maximum length of password, should it be pronouncable, etc.

There are also GUI variants of apg.

For a password manager (a la Password Safe and others) a good place to look is freshmeat.net.

APG works great

Thanks, APG installed, up, and running. Will look into fresh meat, my learning curve is steep, but will start in with GPG(which I have tried to work with for several years, not successfully as of yet. Now, back to trying to make the wireless work.

GPass

and choose GPASS

$ sudo apt-get install gpass

Between APG and GPASS, problem is solved. Thanks once more for all of your help.

I opened a terminal window. Did the line as above. It prompted me for a password, so I entered the root password, it said no good. I tried my login password and I got an error message "Not in sudoers list" why is this??

Thanks,
