Looks more like a work in progress Kenny.
Since you're watching this already, would you let us know when they have a completed installable product?

Timmi check out the ARCH afterglow edition I made for kmason today at arch forums
uses pekwm
its pretty cool and is arch stable, not testing
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic....813555#p813555

have you yet tried Unity desktop in buntu?

hey timmi heres a ready-made ChromiumOS build thats pretty cool
have you seen it?

@linus72... I was going on what you stated. hmm... well, what do you think about my idea then? an installable ISO that installs 2 or 3 distros, and gives the choice at bootup... am I crazy?

edit:
For chromium: yes, I've seen it. see my comment a few posts up.

edit edit:
why is chromeos sooo big? after all the HYPE, that this is totally web-apps-centric, why is 2gb needed for an install? the download is over 300MB... and there are distros, like Puppeee, TinyMe2010, that are around 100MB and you don't have to wait for your internet connection to run any of the apps!

linus72 08-23-2010 07:42 PM

it's a good idea Timmi, and I probably will do that
right now I'm compiling the 2.6.35.3 kernels for the arch/slack versions
so I expect about 1st week of september to be ready for the new ones, etc

my install script is not that great though as my Bash is weak dude
I want it to give user choice of grub (or grub2) and lilo
so I have to do that and have it setup /etc/fstab mtab, etc the right way too

basically I need to combine the aspects of the script with the manual-install method

Being that you have a netbook Timmi, and I dont
maybe you could create a system?
why not, its easy dude

whats your strength?
arch,debian,slack,ubuntu or something else?

whats a GMA500 netbook, is that what you have?

did you see this also?
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Syste...fe-55567.shtml

the chromeos builds are big because it craetes alot of empty space on the usb
its like mostly empty...?!

1) rotfl I don't think so! I'm too noob for that!
2) in the pages link click on "first" you have the description there with my thoughts on some distros I tried. Asus eeePC 800MHz Celeron, 512MB RAM, 8GB SSD, 1024x600.
3) sounds interesting... I'll have to try it out.
4) forgive my skepticism... but any time my system's bus speed becomes my internet connection speed, I fail to see "progress" in the equation. I believe in online storage for data and pictures (encrypted of course), but not my apps, thank you. (besides, online google docs/apps are not for power users, they're so basics/bare below minimum that they're only for casual/occasional users).

Update

Hey everyone, thought with all the changes in distros/updates, it might be a good idea to update this thread.

TinyMe (minimalistic Unity) still has a serious bug (causing random reboots) that as of mid-2010 still isn't fixed... but if it were it would be a very nice one.

Peppermint OS hasn't changed (same bug where some apps, like disk utility, are taller than the screen they are to fit in, still paid subscription(s) in the cloud apps menu)

EasyPeasy 1.6 / 1.5 based on Ubuntu stll the same as half a year ago... with an ISO of nearly 1GB it seems a little large for small netbooks. but the interface rocks!
Ubuntu Netbook remix now based on 10.10 is heavier than ever. Seems too sluggish for older/slower netbooks.

pcLinuxOs have a Gnome-Zen-Mini version (I'm testing that right now)

JoliCloud 1.1 new version released... boot times are sloooowwww as are shutdown times. This is a major disapointment... plus it is more cloud-centric than ever, making apps slower and modifying options complicated (such as in chrome options).

I'll keep this list updated.

Just remember, we need our of the box support for:
power management, Wi-fi, webcam / microphone, support for multi-media websites like youtube, music radio stations (streaming media), and skype.

I gotta say CTKArchLive is running very well and fast on my Toshiba 7000CT Portege 160MB RAM 266MHz PentiumII with 1.5GB taken of the 4GB HDD
http://calimeroteknik.free.fr/ctkarchlive/index-en.html

It's fastest running distro besides CLI I have found for this lappy
I also compiled a custom autogroup-patched kernel for it too
