Second Monitor detected but displays "No signal"

Hi,

I'm trying to connect my Laptop (Mint 19.1) to a second monitor (EIZO) with a VGA (for the monitor) - HDMI (for the laptop) cable. The monitor is detected in the Display panel but it's showing "no signal" no matter which resolution I use.

I still don't see that this has been tried.

Some GPUs require firmware to be able to use external monitors. My amd cpu based HP laptop is such a critter. Although on older versions of debian it didn't need it. Package firmware-amd-graphics in the case of debian 10 / buster and said amd gpu/apu.

Right, first sequence switches to a vtty, which presents a login prompt on a black text screen. The next sequence switches back to the desktop screen. I had hoped the switch back would induce the video driver to recognize the second display properly.

According to what I read, I need to add the monitor section in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, but I couldn't generate this file no matter what I did ! I guess it could be written manually, but I don't know how to write it!

I tried it, it was added to the monitors.xml file, this means that it was executed.

Why do you think either of these? Xrandr is normally run from within an X session in a terminal, or through some startup script. I'm unaware of any X startup scripting having anything to do with any .xml file(s).

Have you tried running it from a GUI terminal first to see if it has any effect?

In my case:

Otherwise I could NOT log in using an external display. As only the laptops LCD would show visuals.
