search broken in file browser

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10. Searching no longer works in the file browser. I've even tried going to a directory, right clicking on a file, choosing properties, and copying and pasting its filename into the search field to eliminate any chance of error. It literally can't find anything.

Suggestions?

Maybe your indexing has just stopped or needs to start all over again.

Try running

Code:
locate "filename"
in the meantime in terminal.

If that doesn't work,

run

Code:
updatedb
or look at your Beagle settings.

Both locate and slocate work.

I'm not running beagle (synaptic says its not installed). My problem is the nautilus file manager. I'm not sure when it broke, but I remember before I replaced 7.0.4 with the 7.10 beta (I'm running 7.10 now) if I searched for a thunderbird directory it would return all of the contents of that directory, but not the directory. Now it just returns no search results (for anything). I have a separate home partition so rather than upgrading I installed the 7.10 beta, doing a manual format of the root and swap partitions as part of the installation.

I am running nautilus-open-terminal.
