Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Hi, ive not been using linux for too long, but ive now sorted out every problem except 1.
i have 2 cd drives, the first (dvd/cd rom) is fine.
but the second, an 8 speed Cd-RW (samsung)
seems to couse the system to lock up.
What i can do with the disk drive......
1) use it to install new packages / linux
2) listen to audio cd's with grip
3) burn audio cd's
what causes my system to freeze completely
1)attempting to mount a cd in that drive
2) Burn data cd's
what i cant understand, is why an audio cd can be burned fine.
but a data cd' crashes the whole thing, i use the same program to burn audio and data (cdrecord)
the cd drive works fine under windows, so i have ruled out a hardware fault.
and i have tried different versions of cd-record, and other burning programs.
my drive is set up for ide-scsi emulation in the grub boot loader
what else could i try, i hear upgrading the kernel is complicated, i have arelativly new kernal 2.4.20-8. should i try upgrading it ?
what else could be the source of this error.
(as im new to linux. it is quite common that when getting my hands dirty and fiddling with it, i completely mess it up, and need to re-install, and wihout being able to burn data cd's i cannot back up the software ive downloaded.)
