make sure you're logged in as root (su root will do the trick too) and then type

emacs /etc/XF86Config

find the section on Input Device and make sure you have the following lines:

Options "Buttons" "5"
Options "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Protocol "IMPS/2"

those are the necessary lines for scrolling with the mouse wheel. hope that helps!

sorry about that, forgot the X11 in the path... anyway, you're looking for the Core Input Device Section, which in my file starts on line 262, yours might be slightly different. just keep an eye out for when it mentions your mouse, you should find it alright.

ok, i didn't mean literally 'your mouse'. right now that section probably says something like

Section "InputDevice"

# Identifier and driver

Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"

or maybe it has mouse1 and protocol auto. anyway, just add the lines i posted above about 5 buttons and zaxismapping, and change the protocol to IMPS/2. that should make your scroll wheel work.

let me know if you need more help.
