I ended up just deleting the contents of .cshrc for now. This rids me of the error and allows me to drop the weather gathering scripts into crontab.

frob23: thanks for the help. I'll check out the "csh evil" link tonight.

Can you drop PERL and Python scripts into crontab?

Is GEMPAK5.8.4/ in /home/gempak/ or / ?

Right now you're showing it under /

Or, if this is a global thing... is it possibly under /usr, or something else?

You can use perl and python scripts in crontab, if you are so inclined.
