Script for dialup

When going online by dialup, it seems that two big things have to happen: (1) the network connection has to be activated, and (2) the modem has to be dialed (with login and password).

Can someone point me in the direction of writing my own script to examine the network connection to see if it needs to be activated, and then to dialup (with login and password)?

(I used to write lots of simple batch files in DOS.)

What do you mean when you say "examine the network connection"?
Are you using a modem?

If so, pppd should be able to set-up the connection and
routes automagically ...

To Tinkster: By "examine the network connection" I mean that I'm using System Tools > Internet Configuration Wizard which eventually opens to allow me to Activate at "Network Configuration."

But then to get the modem to dial, the only way I know to get it to happen is to tell my toolbar weather applet to update. Then the modem dials, and I get online.

Seems like a lousy way to get there, but it works.

I used to be able to use KPPP, but it never seems to establish a connection with the local telephone.

I'm gonna try pppconfig shortly. That might be the ticket!
