Screw Mandrake!

boy, have i got issues! I install mandrake linux 9.0 mabe 7 times. the thing is, at times it freez up the screen just before it restarts. for no reason! and at times it does the same when i try to login. I had to hit the restart button and since i did. it mess up lilo! i try to reinstall it by running a upgrade and choosing nothing. so it can reinstall lilo. it did. i try to boot into windows after it booted into linux find. but i couldn't boot into windows! after window's logo it show some text on top saying it can't find something. so i needed to reinstall everything! crap. i had to keep lilo. i got windows xp recovery cd and it doesn't write a new MBR, so i install linux first and do the partitions. now i install BootMagic as my MBR, and no thinking about using redhat. Mandrake is nothing but problems!!! im going offline in a week. no more internet an di want a linux disturb that will work! what in the world is thing? must read this article mandrake's ftp servers are crap also. theres not one that has a full working downloadable updates. always have to switch ftps.

Indeed you have. Chill out. Not every OS can install on a given set of hardware. Did you check out all your hardware on Mandrake's Hardware Compatibility list before you installed? Have you had a look at the next version - 9.1 There are RC3 isos on the mirrors (I have never had to change mirrors, ever, by the way) that are almost certainly 9.1 final isos. May help.

Edit - PS - Vector SOHO 3.2 is utterly superb.

Yeah, chill.

If you don't want to address your problems, that's ok...but they may not always be Mandrake's fault. The suggestions above are quite good actually.

I've had a few problems with Mandrake on older Hardware, but for the most part, I find it solid and cool to run. Its my distro of choice for my laptop and I don't know what you mean about ftps being crap...I've never found them to lag, I use them for URPMI all the time.

THe only complaint I have is the MandrakeUpdate utility which I think needs work, but then I don't really use it...I do my updates manually.

Is your PNP OS option set to No in your BIOS? If it's set to Yes that cause a lot of strange startup and installation problems.

I downloaded and burnt slackware 9.0 I'm going to install it in a few minutes. I had to do a long, 1Gig of updates after installing mandrake 9.0 and i had to kept choosing other ftps, because it wouldn't download everything. I need to check my bios. I hope if i do need to change the settings it wont affect my windows partition. bootmagic works perfect! i may get redhat if everything works fine with slackware.
