user@user-Compaq-Presario-C700-Notebook-PC ~ $ xscreensaver-demo
The program 'xscreensaver-demo' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install xscreensaver

sudo apt-get install xscreensaver
user@user-Compaq-Presario-C700-Notebook-PC ~ $
The terminal returned that xscreensaver is not installed. So,......if you would like to install the xscreensaver
you will have to either install it from the 'Software Center' or run this command in the terminal.

Code:
sudo apt-get install xscreensaver
Press Enter and type in your password and than type Enter.

I have ran Linux Mint too and really like it.

If you like Linux Mint 17 you will love Linux Mint 18.3!-
Mint 18.3 Mate is really nice:-

Like you, I'm not a fan of Ubuntu either.

Just a note that xscreensaver is not the default Mint Cinnamon screensaver. It is cinnamon-screensaver.

To access the screen saver settings in Mint Cinnamon, click the Mint menu button, then System Settings->Preferences->Screensaver.

You should be able to install LM 18.3 on your notebook. Here's the computer requirements for LM 18.3:

Code:
1GB RAM (2GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
15GB of disk space (20GB recommended).
1024×768 resolution (on lower resolutions, press ALT to drag windows with the mouse if they don't fit in the screen).
2 GB's is recommended but you can give 18.3 a spin. Download the .iso of LM 18.3 and save it to your Downloads directory when you have time. Than.....
Try running the Live LM 18.3 CD/DVD and see how well it runs.

Is your Acer a 32-bit machine or a 64-bit machine?

You're are getting 'Permission denied' because you are not running the command as the 'root' user.

Type:
Code:
sudo apt update
Than type in your password and press Enter.
