Screen rotation without X.org

Is it possible to rotate the bare CLI screen? I'm talking about a system with no X.org here. I'm using a 1600x1200 screen and would like to get more vertical screen estate by rotating the screen into portrait mode.

I'm currently running Slackware 13.0 x64 on an Intel atom board (D945GCLF2D), but this question should apply to all Linux distributions.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

The framebuffer console has no support for rotation.
