Question Screen Resolution problems connected with xorg.conf and xorgconfig with Slackware 10


Hey Everyone!

First time poster in here. Looks like a nice forum, good job!

Anyway, on with my problem.

I'm a new linux user with an apple background under their distribution of unix and X11 operating systems.

My hardware, unfortunately, is largely unknown to me. I have an old Dell computer (donated), 433mhz, 90MB RAM... and that's really all I know about it.

I recently completely reformatted the harddrive with cfdisk off of the Linux Format boot disks of slackware 10.0. Everything is cool, give myself a username, set the root password etc. etc. and then I boot into X11 with startx using the KDE window manager and I find myself staring at a 640x480 desktop. Not so excited anymore.

I poke around a little and find that I'm supposed to xorgconfig for a basic setup before I want to go too poweruser so I do that. The only thing I don't know about is what kind of video card I have because it's whatever came with the computer and I don't have the computer information on that. It's not external though, it's internal. Anyway, I check out the xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/ and it looks fine then I startx again and I boot into a 300x120 screen! Not only that, but this is the "only" screen res available, I can't even CTRL-ALT-'+' through the screen resolutions, let alone switch through them with the screen resize and rotate utility.

The weirdest thing is that 300x120 doesn't even show up in the xorg.conf file, and if I delete that file, the problem is immediately fixed except that my only choice is still 640x480 at 60Hz.

What does it use, the one you're editing?

Well, therein lies the rub.

k... tried both of these things...

As well as the following command as root

these are the strange things that happen.

the first two commands print nothing, and that third command returns that the only xorg.conf files that exists on the system is the one that currently resides in my home folder because I decided to generate one without putting it someplace that X would notice so as to be able to talk with you wonderful people in a screen that is decidedly NOT 300x120.

Does that confuse you? Because it sure as hell confuses me!

just as a small update I also tried as root

This part is what you need to fix. Find out from your monitor's manufacturer/manual what the vertical and horizontal ranges are supposed to be:

Thanx for the quick response!

I'm not at my linux computer at the moment so I can't try your suggestion but just as a quick response from a noob, I'm confused as to what exactly you're refering to. The Horizontal Refresh rate is 31.5-64.3, and the Vertical Refresh is 50-100. The exact manual specs are 30-64. Now I'm gonna have to try to switch the Horizontal Referesh to the exacts specs, but if you care to, why would that small difference be causing this particular problem?

If there's a document out there that has this kind of info in it, could anyone point me to it? Just to satisfy my own curiosity.

Good news and bad news. Now the screen res does not do that weird 300x120 res, but it still only supports 640x480 at 60hz.

So, partial defeat of the problem and partial defeat of me...

Just as an aside that might be of use, I noticed upon starting up today that I had "passed an undefined mode number" to the system (or something to that effect, I can probably copy it down if it is useful in anyway) that had something to do with the display. Is that a possible cause of this problem, or does it have nothing at all whatsoever to do with this problem?

once again, good and bad news

the xorgsetup command did better in regards to my hardware. it automatically looked some of that stuff up which was nice.

Then, I fine tuned it with xorgcfg -textmode like you suggested, and it did indeed make some changes to the file.

then I started into X, and the same thing happened. 640x480 only option.

good news is that grep "Using config file" /var/log/Xorg.0.log now returns /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I really am a nearly complete noob when it comes to this stuff. X11 on my ibook doesn't even use xorg.conf, or it has found a way to very neatly hide it from root. I used Enlightenment as my WM over there and it always seems to work. My point is that I don't even know where to begin "playing" with this part of X and I simply haven't had time to sit down with the man pages... Is that the next step?

Maybe we're putting too much emphasis on the monitor section.
Chances are that you got yourself a video card with only 512KB
of RAM, in which case it wouldn't matter what you try to do in
terms of resolution.

Let's examine your video hardware! :)

lspci - what do you get?

Unfortunately I can't find much info about that particular
chipset, google comes back with hardly any hits in conjunction
with X11 or xorg.

I assume that this is an integrated chipset (shared RAM). Maybe
you can check the machines BIOS to see how much RAM has
been allotted to it, and then put a matching VideoRAM size entry
in your xorg.conf.

Another thing I miss in your subsequent posts is information
about which chipset was picked after the original setup. The
first xorg.conf you posted had "vga" as the driver, I think it
should be "i810" (or "svga" or "fb" if the i810 actes up).

So, after all the trials and tribulations it turns out that it was the hardware issue that you just pointed out, tink, and then it was that xorgsetup doesn't by default put any HorizSync or VertRefresh values into the xorg.conf.

Thanks sooooo much for all of your help, especially you tink. I'm now happily at 1152 x 768 and I have options!!

Hi,

I am a complete noob when it comes to Linux and have no knowledge of any type of computer programing.
Anyhow, i was reading through this thread and was wondering, what did you do to make your resolution work? by adding more text to that file you posted? and where do you access that?

Im learning alot from peoples issues
