Screen resolution for a Thinkpad

I have loaded Fedora 9.0 on an IBM Thinkpad. This machine has an ATI Rage Mobility 16MB video card that is capable of 1600x1200 resolution which I was able to use running Windows 2000. The best I can get out of Fedora is 800x600, further, it doesn't seem to recognize what kind of video video card it has.

I tried the local install of Mandriva and was able to get 1280x768. I have searched for a linux driver without success, any ideas? Thanks

Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and replace your driver in section Device with radeon.

The commercial driver might or might not work depending on your chip set (most don't with those cards).

jens is right. When we originally installed suse on our IBM laptops we had all sorts of issues. One of the first was to make sure you have drivers installed. You can do a search on the IBM site to find the drivers based on laptop model and do your installs once you get the drivers to your machine. We had the same problem and getting the specific drivers installed fixed our display, audio, and power issues.
