screen resolution

this isn't really a linux question but i've run into this problem using linux, i want to increase my screen resoultion to have a larger display for my desktop, but the highest resoultion for my laptop monitor is 1024x 768, i think windows won't let you go above your recommended screen resolution but linux will, so i wanna know what will happen if i go over the maximum screen resoultion of my monitor, i've tried it already and it seems to work but i'm concerned about maybe some long term effects of doing this, thanks.

I am not a hardware expert, but I would think that if it is displaying correctly then you will be allright.

I wouldn't do it. I'm surprised the monitor doesn't just refuse to do it, but you will cause damage in the long term by pushing it to modes it's not designed for.

ya, thanks, i figured it would be bad, i'll just have to stick to the jumbo look
