u could edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and chaneg ur resultion from there

this section in the file specifies that my default depth is 16
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen 1"
Device "i810"
Monitor "i810"
DefaultDepth 16

and this one specifies that the default resolution for my default depth is 1024X768
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0

regards

While you're in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, make sure you get the right VertRefresh and HorizSync rates for your monitor as well.
