screen res without X
Many times I'm just bash, but I go into X just so I can see more of the output.

Outside of X, I only get 80x25. What's the command or the script for getting smaller console fonts? I have a debian-like install.

Try passing "vga=791" to the kernel at boot-time. This will attempt to provide you with a 1024x768 resolution console with 16 bits of color depth. Also, read up on <Linux kernel source>/Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt for more information about modes.
