Screen modes in X windows vs. Gnome 2.6 + monitor issues

I have a problem with my (crappy) monitor (Hansol 701A) under Linux (debian sarge). Running X the screen looks a bit blurry. There appears to be some sort of shadow phenomenon - everything displays twice, or thrice, but the "shadows" are very vague. Nevertheless, my eyes doesn't like this at all, and they get tired very quickly when working in X. In windows XP the display is clear and sharp. What can I do about this?

I found modeline specs supposedly created by Hansol which I inserted into XF86Config-4 in the monitor section like so:

Code:
ModeLine "640x480"	25.175	640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -hsync -vsync
ModeLine "640x480"	31.5	640 656 720 840 480 481 484 500 -hsync -vsync
ModeLine	"640x480"	36 640 696 752 832 480 481 484 509 -hsync -vsync
ModeLine	"800x600"	40	800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync
ModeLine	"800x600"	49.5	800 816 896 1056 600 601 604 625 +hsync +vsync
ModeLine	"800x600"	56.25	800 832 896 1048 600 601 604 631 +hsync +vsync
ModeLine	"1024x768"	65 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync
ModeLine	"1024x768"	78.75	1024 1040 1136 1312 768 769 772 800 +hsync +vsync
ModeLine	"1024x768"	94.5	1024 1072 1168 1376 768 769 772 808 +hsync +vsync
ModeLine	"1280x1024"	108	1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync
This doesn't seem to help though. (I have an integrated GeForce2 graphics chip, if that information helps.)

Another wierd thing is that the resolutions I've defined in the screen section (of XF86Config-4) don't show up in Gnome (2.6). What's this all about? Does Gnome override XF86Config with its own setup of resolution modes? How annoying indeed
