screen goes blank and freezes when kde loads

I have Suse personal 9.1 and I was doing a system update - I accidentally deleted a file called bootsplash which Suse said there was a conflict with - now when I boot I wathch everything load until it is ready to start up kde and then - black screen. Can't switch to another shell, can't do anything. I think I corrupted something. I am running knoppix from a cd - and can access the drives (at least those that aren't locked). Is there a wasy to reset the boot process without losing all my data?

Can you remember what SUSE's error message was?
What happens when you do CTRL-ALT-BKSPC or CTRL-ALT-F2?

This would tell us if X was still running or not and at least get you back to a terminal.

If X died and left your video in an unstable state, ALT-F2 should get you to another term.

I am confused, you say you did this under SUSE but now you are booting a knoppix CD?
