Screen goes black please help!

I am new to Linux but wanted to try it.
I downloaded Ubuntu and burned the ISO to disc, I restarted my PC and the disc runs and seems to be loading, a purple screen appears with a small icon at the bottom, then the screen turns black and that is all, disc stops running and nothing else, am i doing something wrong here?

Hello and welcome to LQ!

Are you able to hit F6 to edit the boot parameters at all? If so, set nomodeset and add "xforcevesa no splash --" without the quotations and see if that does to trick for the time being.

You may have to boot with acpi=off option on the boot cmdline.
