Screen doesn't switch to text when shutting down

I have gnome and debian. When I tell my computer to shut down or restart, it switches to the text screen like it does when it boots up, except it looks like it's in the wrong screen mode. All the letters are huge and blocky.

How can I get the text to be normal size when the computer is shutting down?

Thanks!

What happens when you are in "normal" X mode, and press Ctrl+Shift+F1? Is it the same as startup, or as shutdown.
PS, Ctrl+Shift+F7, gets you back to your X session.

I think it was ctrl-alt-F1 and F7...
Yeah it just showed some big blocky letters. The same as shutting down. (It looks fine starting up)

Just out of curiosity, if the machine is shutting down anyway, why would you care what the screen looks like, you can't (shouldn't) use it...
