Screen and sound problems with Lenny on a G3 iBook 500
 

I have been using different Ubuntu 6.06 flavors on this baby for over a year now, but have done little work in terminal due to a major FU the first time I tried. Anyway, on the suggestion from strangers, I decided to change to a Debian 5.0 with XLDE, and for the most part, I am quite impressed with the results...

EXCEPT:
1) The screen resolution is stuck in 800x600. I need 1024x768. I had this issue when I tried updated to Xubuntu 9.04, and could not resolve it to save my life.
2) Lenny does not recognize any sound device. This was another problem with 9.04 (but not 6.06), and again, I have no idea how to fix it.

There are smaller things too, like the lack of CD eject button or a "right click" button (used to be F12), but I can get used to that... Can anyone help me? Now that I tasted the speed and feel of Lenny and LXDE, I really don't want to return to Xubuntu 6.06. This is my only machine.

Log out of your LXDE session. Now you need to stop X from running. Press ctrl, alt and F1 to come out of your X session. Login as root. If you use GDM (for example) as your display manager, run /etc/init.d/gdm stop. Once X has closed down (you can't see anything on tty7 "ctrl, alt and F7") run Xorg -configure. This will give you a file "xorg.conf.new". Now type "mv xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf" which will move that new file to its correct location. Reboot or start your display manager. If nothing has changed, what resolutions does xrandr show? (Run this in your X session).

Run alsaconf; does that drop you into a setup wizard? That should detect any sound cards. You can then run alsamixer to adjust the sound levels. If alsaconf isn't available, install alsa-utils.
