Cool SCP protocol on Linux server

Hello, I am very new to linux and wanted to get some assistance in regards to enabling SCP protocol on Linux server.

One of my goals is to save running configurations of a switch/router to the server by using scp protocol and the following command:

Router#copy running-config scp://username@X.X.X.X//data/dummyfiles

Well, this command works thankfully; however, when I insert my password, then I receive authentication failed message. Does anybody have any idea what would be the cause behind this?

Router#copy running-config scp://username:password@X.X.X.X//data/dummyfiles

Instead of using a password setup passkeys so that a password is not needed.

Check out this or simalar

Hi rbees,

I am at a point where I need to use password in the command-line... still not sure why it works without password but won't work with password...

What distribution/version is running on the server and have you tried logging into the server using ssh from another computer? By default most distributions disable using root.

What is the make model of your switch router. Make sure you are using the correct syntax. Not enough information to know if the router's firmware can handle or store keys.

Do you just press the return key when prompted for a passwords?

I think you also want to check the syntax of your command. Somehow they don't look right.

If memory serves it should be something like

Code:
scp file-to-be-copied user@host:/path/to/save/location/

Looks like your using a CIsco device and the syntax is specific to its operating system
