Files are being sent to a different server.
What should be the proper log to look into?

It depends on the distro. /var/log/auth.log or /var/log/secure are two common places where sshd can write logs.

Can you use rsync instead. It is much better in many situations than trying scp. It can even work with SSH keys for authentication.

I would say probably the log of sshd.

Since you don't tell us what version/distro of Linux you're using on either the sending or receiving server, who knows? Also, you're version of SSH is pretty old.
