Scanner (Workforce 520) no longer detected. Linux Mint 11
Hi,
I am posting here because I have a similar issue but not with the same printer. The scanner (Workforce 520) had been working just fine since I first installed Linux Mint 11. It was simply plug-n-play with no extra drivers necessary. But now the scanner is no longer detected. Simple Scan displays 'No scanners detected' after starting up. The USB cable is ok because printer works. I know the scanner works too because it works fine in my XP virtual machine. I suspect the malfunction has something to do with the system updates. The system is updated with the latest packages. Code:
dad@dc7600 ~ $ sane-find-scanner Code:
[ 1320.480056] usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 Thanks. |
loshakova,
You please also go through this guide, http://support.epson.ru/upload/libra...nner_linux.pdf |
Thank you. That is the guide I have been following that has not been working. Are you trying to direct me to a specific page?

Thank you.
I started working my way through the manual again. This time, when I ran $ sane-find-scanner There were two scanners listed in the results: found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x011e [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:001:007 found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x0847) at libusb:001:005 product=0x011e is the Perfection 1660 Photo product=0x0847 is the Workforce 600. In the process of verifying this, I found this thread on fedoraforum.org. In post #2, I found the following notes from someone who got iscan to work: 1) downloaded and installed iscan from http://www.epkowa.co.jp/english/linux_e/index.html 2) modified epkowa.conf to include the following lines usb /dev/usb/scanner0 usb 0x04b8 0x011e I also commented out the SCSI Epson line 3) modified epson.conf to include the following lines usb 0x04b8 0x011e again I commented out the SCSI Epson line Can you tell me how to open the files mentioned in steps 2 and 3? I could add both scanners manually. This could be what is still missing. best regards loshakova |

Well, to open both the files mentioned in your last post in steps 2 & 3, you first do this- Code:
# locate epkowa.conf If the system doesn't find both the files, then run this command first updatedb and then again try to locate both the files. It will show you the path of both the files and then you can open both the files from those paths. |
Yes, both scanners are plugged into my computer. This worked in Windows, but so far I have only been able to get one scanner running at a time in Linux.
Linux 9 (with recent updates) runs the 1600 but not the Workforce 600. Linux 12 (booted from disk) runs the Workforce 600 but not the 1600. I was able to find both .conf files, but when I opened them, I found that they were both example files -- ie, they have instructions for how to do the edits I am trying to do, but they are not the place to do them. |
Then just follow the instructions in the file and try to do that. And make sure that you take the backup of those files.
|
I would suggest you to update your current Linux Mint 9 to Linux Mint 12.
|
I considered that. I tried booting from a Linux 12 CD, and it got my Workforce 600 working but didn't recognize the Perfection 1600 at all. The 600 has a bulk feeder, but the 1600 has much better resolution. I'll keep trying out each new Linux OS, and if there's one that runs both scanners, I'll switch.
|
But why are you installing your both the scanners on same OS?
|
Because they have different functions. One is a very high resolution image scanner, but does not have a bulk feeder. The other is suitable for bulk scanning of records, but has lower resolution.
I promise, they did both used to work on the same OS -- just not on Linux. |
