SBlive no background sound

help me out
i installed mandrake 10 and my sound card is SB-live 5.1 . I only get sound from two speakers the other 3 seem messed up. i have played about with the sliders in kmix, alsa-mixer, aumix etc but it can't seem to correct the problem. I also disabled the on board sound card from the bios. i think i am using the correct driver (emu10k1 or snd-emu10k1, it didn't matter whether i switched them or not).
anyone got a clue to what the problem could be.
