Question /sbin/ldconfig

Hi.... I have noticed that the most of the distros at boot time execute the /sbin/ldconfig...
What this commands provide? I think that has something to do with libraries... If we have a system that does not change its software , is it necessary to run ldconfig every time at boot time?
Thx

basically it just checks to make sure library links are all ok and in the right place with the right headers...basically.
