sata drive
ok i was trying mandrake 9.0 and cannot find my serial drive and i think the 10 g ide drive is formated in ntfs.... it came up saying hard drive failer.
one is this because it is in ntfs.... or does the m/b need to support linux altogether. what is up with the serial drives... do only certain o/s work from boot i can get the cd to start it but it says no drive found..... the all ^%$% breaks loose and box locks up and i need to reboot again ??? i tried knoppix 3.1 live.... intresting but very slow lag and lock ups on a couple of programs.... my box runs smoother on the serial drive.... asrock P4V88.... which alows freedom in the cd/dvd drive areas to run faster any suggestions...? |
Re: sata drive
NTFS is a proprietary Microsoft file system. There are some distros that can read and write NTFS but it is experimental, due to being a closed source FS another reason is because MS owns the FS.
I use ext3 fs for all my Linux partitions, except for swap, which is just swap. If you boot up your Knoppix live CD, then open a terminal, the type the following command Code:
fdisk -l |
if you want to learn about sata drive in linux
http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html Try Knoppix 3.8 or 3.9 Maybe try a newer Mandrake 2005 LE Please be precise about messages before lock up We cannot help otherwise What mobo? If this HD is 10 go I really doubt it is sata: it is too small If you are going to wipe the HD to install linux on it you should be fine |

Go in your bios and change the ide controller to "legacy" type. Then linux will find the SATA drives. I know you can do it. Just use you imagination.
