samba vs. kernel-SMB

Dear All,

I downloaded the samba source code from today, and was about to install it, when I had a thought about my kernel.

I thought, "I've seen 'SMB' somewhere in that kernel menuconfig thingy."

So I recompiled my kernel with SMB support first. Now I wonder whether the samba stuff I downloaded is necessary.

QUESTION: Is samba server software necessary if the kernel is SMB-ready?

Yes, the smb support in the kernel allows you to mount smb shares using Samba(more specificly smbmount). So basically, you need both, though if your kernel has no smb support you can still access these shares using smbclient, but mounting is more convenient.

Dear Demonbane,

Thank you for clarifying the mount/client distinction.
