Samba Troubles
 

I've been trying to get Samba running all day with no luck. I can't see the server from my Windows pc, but I can't even see it from my Linux box either.

When I run the command smbclient //localhost/backup -U jesse, I get the error, "timeout connecting to 127.0.0.1:445, timeout connecting to 127.0.0.1:139". I have made sure that smb is started, and smbd and nmbd as well. I can smbclient to my Windows pc, and that seems to be working just fine.

There is nothing in the log files that would indicate the problem, just the copyright notice at the start of the file.. Any ideas what I can look at?

It is because you have misconfigured samba. The IP address 127.0.0.1 is the loopback device and is not used for network connect.

Try giving your Network Interface Device (Network Card) an IP address like 196.168.1.1 or something similar and then reconfigure Samba.

No, I haven't given my NIC an ip address of 127.0.0.1. I've actually got an address of 192.168.1.102. I'm using localhost (127.0.0.1) to test with. It doesn't matter if I try to connect to samba using risa (my machine's name), localhost (127.0.0.1), or 192.168.1.102, the results are the same, I won't let me in. If I do a smbclient //risa/backup, or smbclient //192.168.1.102/backup, then I get an "error connecting to 192.168.1.102 (Invalid Argument)". That is a different error message than the localhost one. Perhaps I won't be able to use locahost for this. At any rate, I still can't connect.

I was bending my head for ages on Samba. Have you lowered the firewall, as mine was blocking everything even smbclient attempts.

service iptables stop

usually puts it down.

Jesse, you are trying to mount a XP drive right?

first lets assume that you have two computers, one name harris and the other harry
Harris has an ip of 192.168.1.102
Harry has an ip of 192.168.1.103

Harris is an Linux box and Harry is an windows box.

In harris host file /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.103 harry

Then go to cl and ping harry and you should get replys. Once this is done then I will help you with the exact command of mount -t smbfs -o username=bob,password=bob //harry/backup /mnt/backup

This should work fine. Let me know
Also you could post your smb.conf file for me to look at it. or you could testparm it.
