SAMBA shares not mounting w/ a Win2k3 SBS PDC
 

Hello all;

I have been using/administrating MS Windows for 15 years and now I have been thrust into a Linux environment. Quite a shock finding out how little I know!


Our Environment uses a Windows 2003 SBS as the Domain Controller. We have SAMBA running on the critical server, 6 development servers with various OS's and 30+ WinXp, Win2K & Redhat Fedora workstations attached to the PDC.

Anyways, we recently changed architecture from PC's to Rackmount servers. Our primary network used 4 critical Linux servers (I don't know their OS types other thna Linux).
They were:
DEVFS (where the real work was done)
CaiFS (little change in files but critical)
MOE (PDC, SAMBA, Authentication)
VaultFS (D2D2tape Server -- Replaced by Autoloader)

These four machines were replaced by a new rackmounted,significantly more powerful, server.
We copy (Rsynched) all the data over to the new server and "turned off" the old machines.
We named the new machine DEVFS, and the old machine OldDevfs. Also we changed the DNS & DHCP pointers to avoid naming conflicts.

Where is gets interesting is that we installed A Backup Software on DEVFS.
I then went from machine to machine trying to dump the local backups to the DEVFS to include them in the backups.
From my terminal I can access my personal files on the shares in DEVFS. So can just about everyone else.

But we can't map the drive to point our Windows Backup. We keep getting:

\\devfs is not accessible. You might have permissions to use this network resource. COntact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The request is not supported.

All of us who used to be able to connect now get that error.

What are we doing wrong?

My blind guesses, issues with the previously setup networked drives? Re-authenticating with the new systems? Both of these might have to do with windows caching some of the data, possibly a simple restart of the workstations might take care of it?

There should be *something* in the logs when these access attempts are made, that might be helpful in diagnosing this problem.

Also, check the /etc/hosts and /etc/hosts.deny /etc/hosts.allow files (if they exist) to make sure nothing hard coded in there is affecting these updates.

If that was TOO much info, I apologize. It just that in my job I know somethings and fail to explain to others and they end up scratching their heads.

I have narrowed the issue to being that we cannot access the REDHAT ES4 from any of the Window 200x machines.
We have Win 2K Advanced Server, Win 2k3 SBS, Win 2k3 64bit Ent. and Win 2k3 Standard Server.
NONE of these will allow me to access \\devfs\share

Are we missing something?

BTW: I looked at each if the /etc/hosts files.. they're read only and blank
