it should be smbd start but you may have to be in the directory of ......./samba/sbin. I don't play with RH so I don't know its location. You could search for it though

In RH, you can configure samba (or any service) to start using 'chckconfig'

In this case:

chkconfig --level 345 smb on

The '345' are the run levels in which you want smb to be on automatically.

You can check that it worked correctly via:

chkconfig --list | grep 'smb'

you should see something like:
smb 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off

Of course, you need root privileges to do this.

if you already have it installed then

/etc/rc.d/init/smb start will turn it on. if you have not installed it, then look into the YUM project, install yum and then type:

yum install samba

sit back and wait. then you will only need to configure the smb.conf file to work properly. do a search here for my name and samba. i have posted a few times a GREAT link to a RH tutorial on samba that works perfect for me every time.
