samba/proxy troubles

Alright: new user of RedHat 8.0; worked mostly flawlessly for the first day, up through installing Samba and the xsmbrowser client.

I had a proxy server installed on a windows box on my home network and I plugged the address into mozilla/gaim and it worked just fine out of the box. Then, while browsing my samba network, everything suddenly stops working: my eth0 deactivates and won't reactivate, xsmbroswer says it's unable to find domain master, I get Network Error 111: connection refused.

Apparently, someone had run the network connection wizard on the XP box that I connected to, and this may have messed up some DCHP serving ability. Now not only can't I get samba to browse the network, but I can't browse the internet through the proxy, either.

I'm very new to Linux and at this point I'm pretty lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

recheck your domain name or workgroup name as well as your ip address. The wizard hoses all your networking settings in windoze.

I can get eth0 to activate by using a fixed IP instead of DCHP and the machines will ping one another, but I'm not sure what I should change in either one's configuration.

So... What should I be looking for? All the IPs and workgroups seem to be the same as they were.

Verify that the Internet Connection Firewall is disabled on the XP machines?
