samba problems

ive been struggeling to get smaba to work correctly.
im running red hat 9, and am trying to get my linux box to access my xo box and vice versa.
I have edited om smb.conf file and set up swat aswell. I have started the smb and nmd services.

Bit when trying to access my network services i get a error saying: Couldnt display smb:///' , becouse Nautils cannot contact the SMB master browser.
Check that an SMB server is running in the local network.

Can anybody pls tell me where im going wrong????

Do you have the Samba service running? You should be able to check by running 'dmesg | less' as root. Look for smb.

Hi,

You can also check if the samba service is started using 'service samba status'. Also, for problems like these it's good to look at the log files to see what error it reports. Take a look at /var/log/samba/log.nmbd & log.smbd. "log.smbd" will tell you if the service has been start|stop and the other will tell you what problems it's encountering.

I should mention that I too had problems with Red Hat 9 and Fedora Core 1 getting Samba and NFS to connect to other machines. I also had problems trying to transfer files using SCP. In the end, I used SCP from my Mandrake 9.2 workstation to pull files from my Fedora Core laptop. That laptop now also runs Mandrake 9.2.

Red Hat 9 is probably one of the most prolific distributions in use as corporate Internet servers, so I am sure that there is a way to accomplish this task. As a rank amateur Linux newbie, in two weeks of searching, reading and asking others for help, a solution still alluded me, and so I chose to switch distributions. I prefer the network TCP/IP setup GUI assistant that RH/Fedora uses, but needed to be able to communicate with my other machines, as well as printing to my network printer.
