Question Samba Passwords

I am a new convert from windows, and after many hours managed to make myself a home server to deal with login (NIS & SAMBA) file share, email etc. It controls both windows and linux users and user areas. I am using Fedora Core 1 on an Athlon 1800XP box.

Due to terminal stupidity on my part I needed to do a re-install. I have reused the previous configuration files including my smb.conf which worked fine before.

This time when I enter the samba users passwords it is replacing them with an 8 letter password of its own ! I cannot work out what this password is. Changing them using either the GUI tool or the smbpasswd -a command does not change this.

Any ideas what is going on here?

smbpasswd -a adds a new user to the database

q: have you tried logging accessing the share or logging in as the user despite the funn password activity?

Thanks for replying.

Yes I did try and log on but it didn't work. I also noticed that my own smb.conf was being altered.

I have tracked down the "solution". Previously I did everything by shell commands. I appears that the Redhat/Fedora GUI adds stuff to the smb.conf file but not in the same place as the sample. It then deletes relevant commands elsewhere. Me putting my original lines back in the old place achieved nothing.

As for the password bit I think the GUI simply shows 8 characters regardless of password length. Despite what the help info says it DOES NOT enable the accounts this must be done in terminal by

smbpasswd -e whoever

As the first time I did it in terminal I did not have any of these problems. Guess which I am going to use in the event I do it again.

Thanks for the help.
