I was wondering if anyone could give me a pointer on SAMBA.
I have editied the smb.conf file to show Workgroup, as below but it will not show in WIndows 0S , it has a dhcp assigned address and has name resoloution.

workgroup = LINUXSER
os level = 2
time server = yes
unix extensions = yes
encrypt passwords = yes
printing = CUPS
printcap name = CUPS
socket options = SO_KEEPALIVE IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY
wins support = no
character set = ISO8859-15
client code page = 850
veto files = /*.eml/*.nws/riched20.dll/*.{*}/
when i use the command LinuxSer:/etc/samba # smbclient -L localhost
I get the following but there is no server defined, or Workgroup ??
Anonymous login successful

Have you added the Windows username/ password to the linux machine in general, and to Samba as well.
You also don't list any shares, however I'm assuming you have them.
Does the machine show at all in Network Neighborhood?
Also, try setting encrypted passwords to no.
Two more thoughts...
Are you using SWAT to configure Samba?
Have you checked out the O'Reilly book included with Suse. (It was with 8 at least). /usr/share/doc/Samba/html (I think)... I'm ashamed to admit it, but I'm in Windows right now.

As far as listing shares, how is that done exactly, i thought i had done it with this entry
Sharename Type Comment
--------- ---- -------
shares Disk Linuxserv01 ETC
cdrom Disk Linuxserv01 CD-ROM
print$ Disk Printer Drivers
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (Samba 2.2.5)
ADMIN$ Disk IPC Service (Samba 2.2.5)
SWAT ? no i have just manually edited the smb.conf file , and manually started the following
cd /etc/rc.d/./smb start
cd/etc/rc.d/./nmb start
i can see the server in windows 2000 and XP but am unable to browse into the file system ?

To add a user to Samba, you use smbpasswd
smbpasswd -a username password
